Ques. 1AIPMT 2011 (Prelims)

Which one of the following conditions correctly describes the manner of determining the sex ?

  1. XO condition in humans as found in Turner Syndrome, determines female sex
  2. XO type of sex chromosomes determine male sex in grasshopper
  3. Homozygous sex chromosomes (ZZ) determine female sex in Birds
  4. Homozygous sex chromosomes (XX) produce male in Drosophila

Answer

(2) XO type of sex chromosomes determine male sex in grasshopper

Solution

(1) Turner's syndrome (XO) is a chromosomal disorder; in humans the Y chromosome determines maleness, so XO does not 'determine' female sex — it is an abnormal sterile female.

(2) As per NCERT, in grasshopper the males have only one X chromosome (XO) besides autosomes, while females are XX ⇒ XO determines male sex.

(3) In birds, ZZ (homogametic) is male and ZW is female ⇒ incorrect.

(4) In Drosophila, XX is female and XY is male ⇒ incorrect.
